Frequently Asked Questions
- What happens to the information I enter into globefund.com? Is it given out to any other companies?
The globefund.com Information Privacy Policy defines clearly that the information you enter in setting up your portfolio is kept confidential and secure to the best of our ability. A backup of all GLOBE Portfolio data is made daily.
Aggregate data related to GLOBE Portfolio (number of users of GLOBE Portfolio in total, average number of funds in a portfolio) may be shared with globefund.com advertisers and potential advertisers, but data related to an individual portfolio will always be kept secure. For more details, see The globefund.com Information Privacy Policy.
- What if I forget my password?
If you forget or lose your password, you should click Lost your Password? on the login screen, and globefund.com will show you the question you entered when you registered and prompt you for the answer. For additional security, you will also be asked to enter the postal code you entered when you registered. If you enter the correct answer, globefund.com logs you into GLOBE Portfolio and changes your password to your username. You will be prompted to enter a new password. globefund.com recommends that you enter a new password at this time.
- How do I change my password?
If you want to change your password, click Change Registration on the GLOBE Portfolio main page and change your Password and Confirm Password on the Change Registration screen. Click Submit Registration.
- How can I change the name of a portfolio?
To change the name of a portfolio, click Rename/Delete Portfolio on the GLOBE Portfolio main page. Under Option A, select the portfolio name you would like to change from the drop-down list. In the box labelled Enter new name, type the new portfolio name. Click Rename.
- Can I use my Fundlist to set up my portfolio?
Because GLOBE Portfolio requires registration and the Fundlist does not, it is not possible to transfer information between them, or to use your Fundlist to build your portfolio.
- Can I enter mutual fund transactions that took place prior to December 31, 1997? If so, how?
globefund.com does not have daily prices for all funds prior to December 31, 1997. If you are entering a transaction which took place before December 31, 1997, you must enter a unit price in order for your portfolio to be tracked accurately to the date you are entering. This unit price can be found on the statement from your fund company.
The procedure for entering a unit price is outlined in Adding and Deleting Transactions.
- When are my reports updated?
Reports will typically reflect your portfolio as of the close of the previous business day. Our database is updated with daily fund performance data at approximately 8:00 p.m. EST and then portfolios are updated, so reports displayed after approximately 9:00 p.m. EST will reflect the current day's closing prices. The date shown at the top of the report indicates the date of the fund prices used in generating the report.
- How are the returns calculated?
GLOBE Portfolio relies on the industry accepted method of computing investment return which is based on the internal rate of return (IRR) algorithm. As stipulated by the Association of Investment Management Research (AIMR), mutual funds in Canada use the IRR method for presenting their rates of return. According to AIMR, "the recommended measurement of performance for presentation of the performance of a single private equity investment is the investment's internal rate of return".
The rate of return calculated by IRR is the interest rate corresponding to a zero net present value of a series of cash flows. For further details, see the Performance Report section of the User Guide. Technically-minded users can gain more insight into the workings of IRR by looking at the help information available on IRR in Microsoft's Excel spreadsheet product.
- How do funds that merge together affect my portfolio?
To account for the merger of two funds, you must enter a sell transaction to sell all units held in the old fund using the date the merger took place. Then you must reinvest that amount into the newly-formed fund by entering a buy transaction for the new fund. The statements from your broker or fund company will reflect similar transactions. The old fund will remain in your portfolio until you have completed the above transactions so don't worry about losing your record of it. Remember though that future returns on the old fund cannot be calculated because of the lack of any ongoing price information.
- How long do I stay logged into GLOBE Portfolio? Do I have to Logout?
After logging in, you may visit other parts of the globefund.com site (or even other sites), and return to GLOBE Portfolio without having to log in again and again. However, your login session will terminate if you do not use GLOBE Portfolio for approximately 30 minutes or if you leave your PC for an extended period of time.
There is a Logout option for GLOBE Portfolio which you are not required to use. However, if you use GLOBE Portfolio from a computer that others have access to, it is wise to click Logout on the GLOBE Portfolio main page when you leave the computer to ensure the security of your portfolio information.

What is a Portfolio?
In globefund.com, a portfolio is like a file folder where you put important information about your mutual fund investments. You can have more than one portfolio, just as you can have more than one file folder, so you can organize your investments in a way that is meaningful to you. In one folder you may put all your investments related to your RRSP, and in another folder you may put all of your investments related to your children's education. Collectively, all of your folders represent your entire collection of mutual fund investments.
Every globefund.com user can create a maximum of 10 portfolios.
Basic Steps to Set Up a Portfolio
There are three basic steps to setting up a portfolio of mutual funds:
- Create a portfolio.
- Add funds to the portfolio.
- Add single transactions to specify the units or dollar value for each of the funds in the portfolio.
Before proceeding to set up a portfolio, take a moment to read about and understand the two different approaches described below. The first approach (Tracking from this Point Forward) is an easier approach, particularly if you have been investing in mutual funds for a long time and have a large and/or diverse portfolio of funds. If have been investing in mutual funds for over six months and you choose to set up your portfolio using the second approach (Tracking from the Time of Purchase), you must have records of all transactions.
Tracking from this Point Forward
If you want to minimize the effort of setting up your portfolio and want to monitor it via globefund.com from this point forward, we recommend getting the most recent copy of the statement(s) you received from your financial advisor, broker, or fund company. You can then proceed to complete the steps listed above, taking the information needed from your statement(s).
With this approach, you will be setting up your portfolio as if you were purchasing the fund(s) as of the date of the statement.
Tracking from the Time of Purchase
If you want to see your growth and return from the time you originally invested in your mutual funds, you need to have kept good records. You will need to know:
- the exact price at which you bought/sold all your funds
- the date of each buy/sell transaction, and
- either the number of units bought/sold or the total dollar value of the transaction
globefund.com has complete daily price data for all funds only as of December 31, 1997. This means that for any transactions you have made since that date, globefund.com can provide the unit price for the fund. If you wish to enter any transactions dated prior to December 31, 1997, you must enter the unit price you paid for the funds.
To track the exact value of your mutual fund investments, you must also enter the commission information for each transaction correctly.
Creating a Portfolio
Creating a portfolio in globefund.com is easy.
- On the GLOBE Portfolio main page, click Create Portfolio.
- On the next page, type a portfolio name in the box beside Enter Portfolio Name. A portfolio name can be up to 30 characters, and should contain only letters and numbers. Special characters (like $, #, %, ", ', <, >) are not permitted in a portfolio name.
- Click Create.
Every globefund.com user is allowed to have up to 10 portfolios.
If you create more than one portfolio, globefund.com always indicates which portfolio the report or transaction(s) on the screen pertains to. Switching from one portfolio to another is easily done by selecting a different portfolio from a pull-down list and clicking Go.
Adding Funds to a Portfolio
If you think of a portfolio as a file folder, the process of adding funds to the portfolio is like determining what will go into the folder. Once you have added the funds that make up your portfolio, you can proceed to enter the buy and sell transactions.
To add a fund to your portfolio:
- On the GLOBE Portfolio main page, click Add Funds. globefund.com displays the first Add Fund page.
- Click on the down arrow to display a pull-down list of fund companies. Move your mouse to highlight your selection, and click Next.
- On the next Add Fund screen, click on the down arrow to select a fund from the fund family you selected in step 2.
- Click the down arrow below Reinvest Distribution to indicate whether you will reinvest distributions received through this fund (Yes or No). Further information on distributions is provided in the Reinvesting Distributions section.
- Optionally, you can enter comments related to this fund. Most often, users will leave this area blank. Adding a Fund to Your Portfolio Multiple Times provides examples of where this comments area is useful.
- Click Add Fund. globefund.com will confirm the addition of this fund to your portfolio.
- At this point, you can:
- select another fund to add to your portfolio from the pull-down list of funds
- click Select another Company to add a fund from another fund company
- click Add Transaction if you have no other funds to add to the portfolio and want to start entering transactions, or
- click Portfolio on the globefund.com toolbar at the top of the page to return to the GLOBE Portfolio main page
Portfolio Transactions
There are four types of transactions that can be part of your portfolio:
- single buy or sell transactions
- recurring transactions (buy transactions that you set up through pre-approved bank withdrawals or regularly scheduled sell transactions)
- special transactions to account for fees or other expenses
- distribution transactions
The following sections provide instructions on how to enter the first three types of transactions. The distribution transactions are not transactions that you enter, but they are the transactions you are used to seeing on statements you receive from your financial advisor or broker. When a fund declares a distribution, globefund.com automatically updates your portfolio by adding the distribution for you (i.e., you do not have to enter the distribution yourself).
Adding a Transaction to a Portfolio
To add a single transaction (a buy or a sell transaction), follow the instructions below.
- On the GLOBE Portfolio main page, click Add Single Transaction.
- If you have more than one portfolio, ensure that the portfolio shown in the screen heading is the portfolio you want to add this transaction to. If it is not, click Change Portfolio and select the correct portfolio for this transaction.
- Choose the fund you want to add the transaction for from the pull-down list beside Select Fund. If the fund is not in the list, click Add Fund and add the fund to your portfolio using the Add Fund option.
- Enter the date of the transaction in the date fields in the format yy mm dd.
- If you are entering a transaction that took place after December 31, 1997, you can:
- click the circle beside $ and enter a unit price in the adjacent box, or
- click the circle beside Market Price and globefund.com will use its unit price for that date
If your transaction precedes December 31, 1997, you must enter a unit price in order for your portfolio to be tracked accurately to the date you are entering. globefund.com does not have daily prices for all funds prior to December 31, 1997.
If you do not know the unit price for that date, there are two ways to proceed. Both involve selecting Market Price and changing the transaction date. Please be sure you have read the previous section Basic Steps to Set Up a Portfolio before deciding how to proceed.
Option 1: Change the date to the last business day of the month in which the transaction took place.
globefund.com has monthly closing prices for all funds going back to when the fund began. Therefore, you can change the transaction date to the last business day of the month in which the transaction took place (that is, if you have a calendar for that year or are able to figure out the date of the last business day). Note that this price will likely be different than the fund price for the date of your transaction, so data on your return or gain/loss from this investment will not be entirely accurate.
Option 2: Change to the date of one of your statements from the fund company.
The simplest thing to do when you do not have exact records for all your transactions is to retrieve your most recent statement from the fund company and enter your transaction(s) as of the date of that statement. The statement should have the number of units and the unit price for your holdings with that fund company. globefund.com will then provide you with reports that track your gain/loss for the fund investment from that date forward.- Under Amount or # Units, click the circle beside $ and type the number of units you purchased or sold on the transaction date in the adjacent box or click the circle beside # Units and type the total dollar value of the transaction in the adjacent box. If you are entering a buy transaction and entering information as of your most recent statement from the fund company, you would be entering either the number of units you now own OR the total value of your investment in the fund. You only need to enter one of these values. If you enter both, globefund.com will only use the number of units.
- If you are paying any fees for this transaction, either to a broker, financial planner, or fund company, you must enter either a percentage or a dollar value. Remember that for front-end load funds, the fees are charged when you purchase the funds, while for back-end load funds, the fees are paid when you sell funds.
- Click either Buy or Sell depending on the type of transaction you are entering. No real units will be bought or sold. The Confirmation screen will be shown.
- If the transaction is correct, click Confirm this Transaction. To correct or change the transaction, click your Web browser's Back button.

The heading of virtually every GLOBE Portfolio screen indicates which portfolio the screen pertains to. You can switch your current portfolio at any time by clicking a button or pull-down menu from most screens.
globefund.com remembers which portfolio you last worked on or viewed reports for, and when you next return to GLOBE Portfolio, that portfolio will be your 'current portfolio'.

- On the GLOBE Portfolio main page, click Delete Transaction. Delete all transactions in the portfolio.
- On the GLOBE Portfolio main page, click Delete Funds. Delete all funds in the portfolio.
- On the GLOBE Portfolio main page, click Rename/Delete Portfolio. Use Option A to delete all your portfolios.
- On the GLOBE Portfolio main page, click Change Registration. Change any personal information (for example, first/last name, e-mail address, postal code). Click Submit Registration.
This will leave your account empty, with no financial data in it at all.

- click Portfolio on the globefund.com toolbar at the top of the page to return to the GLOBE Portfolio main page
Reinvesting Distributions
One of the key decisions you make when you invest in a particular mutual fund is whether or not you will reinvest distributions owed to you from the fund. Distributions are composed of interest payments, dividends, or capital gains, depending on the type of fund. How you handle distributions is something you would discuss with your financial planner. Most people who have their investments inside an RRSP choose to reinvest distributions.
In order for globefund.com to track the value of your portfolio correctly, you must indicate when you add a fund to your portfolio whether you are reinvesting the distributions from this fund or not.
You may decide initially not to reinvest distributions, but later decide to reinvest, or vice versa. globefund.com allows you to change this information for any of your funds through the Change Fund Information option.
Adding a Fund to Your Portfolio Multiple Times
While most fund portfolios will not require adding a fund multiple times, it is possible and sometimes recommended to add a particular fund to a portfolio more than once. The following are the some of the main reasons you would do this:
- You have invested in a particular fund at different times and you have decided to handle distributions differently each time you have invested.
For example, you might have decided to invest long-term in a fund and reinvest all distributions. Later you might decide to invest in the same fund, but choose to receive distributions in cash as a source of income.- You have multiple investments in a particular fund, and have purchased the fund from different sources.
For example, you might have purchased the fund from a discount broker the first time, but the next time the purchase was made through a financial planner. If your investment in a particular fund is reported on different statements, you may want to add the fund to your portfolio more than once to reflect the different sources you have purchased through.- You have purchased a particular fund, and have chosen different fee load options.
For example, if you purchase a fund and normally pay a front-end fee, but later decide to purchase the same fund but with a back-end load, you would probably want to track the investments separately. They would likely be handled separated on your statements as well.To add the same fund to your portfolio more than once, you use the Add Funds option from the GLOBE Portfolio main page and follow the normal procedure to add a fund to your portfolio. Once a fund has been added more than once, you will see two (or more) listings for the fund in any of the pull-down listings of the funds in your portfolio, similar to the following:
XYZ Balanced Fund
XYZ Balanced Fund [2]
Use the Comments area on the second Add Funds page to distinguish one fund from the other. For example, you might enter who you purchased the fund from or the load option associated with the fund.
Adding Funds Valued in U.S. Dollars
GLOBE Portfolio tracks over 200 Canadian mutual funds that are valued in U.S. dollars. If you include such funds in your portfolio, the GLOBE Portfolio reports will be split into separate sections for your Canadian and U.S. dollar holdings.
To add U.S. dollar funds to your portfolio, follow these steps:
- On the GLOBE Portfolio main page, click Add Funds.
- Click on the down arrow to display a pull-down list of fund companies. Move your mouse to highlight your selection, and click Next.
- On the next Add Fund screen, click on the down arrow to select a fund from the fund family you selected in step 2. U.S. dollar funds are listed in the drop-down list with (US$) after the fund name.
- Click the down arrow below Reinvest Distribution to indicate whether you will reinvest distributions received through this fund (Yes or No). Further information on distributions is provided in the section Reinvesting Distributions.
- Optionally, you can enter comments related to this fund. Most often, users will leave this area blank. Adding a Fund to Your Portfolio Multiple Times provides examples of where this comments area is useful.
- Click Add Fund. globefund.com will confirm the addition of this fund to your portfolio.
Money Market Funds
GLOBE Portfolio treats fixed value money market funds with a daily accrued income factor as follows. If you buy units or sell all units units partway through the month, you do not receive the full amount of the month-end distribution because you did not hold the units for the full period.
When you add a transaction to buy units or sell all units on a date for which globefund knows the exact distribution that was paid at month end, GLOBE Portfolio calculates your distribution using a weighted average based on the total distribution for the month and the number of days you held each unit during that month.
When you add a transaction to buy units during the current month, globefund does not yet know what the month-end distribution will be. In this case, GLOBE Portfolio waits until the distribution gets paid and the weighted average calculation described above is done at that time.
When you sell all units partway through the current month, globefund does not yet know what the month-end distribution will be. In this case, GLOBE Portfolio calculates your distribution using a weighted average based on the total distribution for the previous month and the number of days you held each unit during the current month. This may cause a small difference between the distribution shown on your fund company statement and that reported by GLOBE Portfolio.
The weighted average calculation used by GLOBE Portfolio differs from the method used by the fund companies to calculate your distribution. Fund companies calculate daily accruals and the accrual rate can change from day to day. This may cause a small difference between the distribution shown on your fund company statement and that reported by GLOBE Portfolio.
Deleting Funds
Note: Funds that have transactions associated with them cannot be deleted from a portfolio. The associated transactions must be deleted before the fund can be deleted. For instructions, see Deleting Transactions.
To delete a fund from your portfolio:
- On the GLOBE Portfolio main page, click Delete Funds. globefund.com displays a list of the funds in the current portfolio.
- Click in the checkbox beside the fund you wish to delete.
- Click Delete. globefund.com re-displays the page with the fund deleted from the list.
Changing Fund Information
When you add a fund to your portfolio, you must indicate whether you will or will not be reinvesting distributions that are paid out by the fund company. You also have the option of entering a comment or brief note that may remind you, for example, of who you purchased the fund from.
However, over the course of investing in a fund, you may decide to change how you handle distributions. For example, you may start out reinvesting distributions but later change to receiving distributions as cash. You may also want to change the comment you entered for a particular fund.
The Change Fund Information option allows you to make these changes. To use this option, follow the instructions below.
- On the GLOBE Portfolio main page, click Change Fund Information. globefund.com lists all the funds in the current portfolio and, for each fund, shows whether or not distributions are reinvested and any Comments.
- To change distribution handling, click the down arrow in the Reinvest Distribution column beside the fund you wish to change and select the correct option (Yes or No).
- To change the Comments for any fund, click in the appropriate text area and type over the other information.

Fund Name Changes
The name of a mutual fund may change, due to a fund company merger or for other reasons. When such a change occurs, globefund.com automatically updates your portfolio to show the new fund name. Although the fund appears under the new name, globefund.com maintains the price history of the old fund. You can enter buy and sell transactions for dates prior to the name change by using the new fund name.

Starting a Recurring Transaction
Many investors make arrangements with their financial advisor or broker to purchase mutual funds on a regular basis throughout the year, typically through pre-approved bank withdrawls. It is also possible (though less common) to set up a systematic sale of mutual funds. In globefund.com, these types of regular transactions are set up as recurring transactions.
Once you have a recurring transaction set up, globefund.com will automatically generate the buy or sell transactions on the appropriate day(s) of the month. You will see these transactions when you display the Transaction Report for your portfolio.
To start a recurring transaction in your portfolio, follow the instructions below.
- On the GLOBE Portfolio main page, click Start Recurring Transaction.
- If you have more than one portfolio, ensure that the portfolio shown in the screen heading is the portfolio you want to add this recurring transaction to. If it is not, click Change Portfolio and select the correct portfolio for this transaction.
- Choose the fund you want to add the recurring transaction for from the pull-down list beside Select Fund.
If the fund is not in the list, click Add Fund to go the Add Funds screen where you can add the fund to your portfolio.- Enter the date of the first transaction in the date fields in the format yy mm dd.
- Because globefund.com only has complete daily fund prices back to December 31, 1997, it is not possible to start a recurring transaction prior to that date. If you started a recurring transaction prior to December 31, 1997, you should use the Add Single Transaction option to enter the value you have accumulated (or sold off) through that recurring transaction as of some date after December 31, 1997. Your 1997 year-end statement would give you your total units and investment in the fund as of the close of the year. You could then start a recurring transaction as of the beginning of 1998.
- The date of the first transaction cannot be a date in the future. The date of the first transaction must pass, ensuring that a market price is available, before the recurring transaction can be started.
- Select the frequency of the transaction. For clarification, Bi-weekly is every second week (26 transactions a year), while Semi-monthly is twice a month (24 transactions a year). If you select Semi-monthly, you must enter two dates in the same month, indicating the two days of each month when the transactions take place. Further information is available in the Recurring Transaction Frequencies section.
- Enter the dollar value you will either pay on a recurring basis to purchase funds or sell and convert to cash.
- If you are paying any fees to a broker, financial planner, or fund company, you must enter either a percentage or a dollar value.
- Click either Buy or Sell depending on the type of recurring transaction you are setting up. The Confirmation screen will be shown.
- If the transaction is correct, click Confirm this Transaction. To correct or change the transaction, click your Web browser's Back button.
In the evening after the day's closing fund prices have been added, globefund.com sets to work executing the recurring transactions that are scheduled for that date. If by any circumstance, the day's closing price for a particular fund is not available in globefund.com's database, globefund.com will be unable to execute the transaction, but will try to execute the transaction the next day when the missing closing price is available.
Recurring Transaction Frequencies
globefund.com allows you to set up a recurring transaction with any of the following frequencies. However, you should be aware that not all fund companies will accept regular 'buys' of their funds in all of these frequencies. In fact, some may only accept monthly (and then only on specific days of the month).
Weekly Bi-weekly Semi-monthly Monthly Bi-monthly Quarterly End of month For Weekly transactions, globefund.com will execute the transaction every 7 days. If it hits a statutory holiday (markets are closed), it executes the transaction on the next business day. The following transaction will be 7 days after the holiday.
For Bi-weekly transactions, globefund.com will execute the transaction every 14 days. If it hits a statutory holiday (markets are closed), it executes the transaction on the next business day. The following transaction will be 14 days after the holiday.
For Semi-monthly transactions, globefund.com will execute the transaction on the same two days each month (e.g., May 1 and 15, June 1 and 15). If either of those two days is a statutory holiday (markets are closed) or weekend, globefund.com executes the transaction on the next business day.
For Monthly transactions, globefund.com will execute the transaction on the same day each month (e.g., May 11, June 11, July 11). If that day is a statutory holiday (markets are closed) or weekend, globefund executes the transaction on the next business day.
For Bi-monthly transactions, globefund.com will execute the transaction on the same day of every second month (e.g., January 15, March 15, May 15, July 15). If that day is a statutory holiday (markets are closed) or weekend, globefund.com executes the transaction on the next business day.
For Quarterly transactions, globefund.com will execute the transaction on the same day of every third month (e.g., January 15, April 15, July 15). If that day is a statutory holiday (markets are closed) or weekend, globefund.com executes the transaction on the next business day.
When Semi-monthly, Monthly, Bi-monthly, or Quarterly transactions have a start date that is either the 29th, 30th or 31st of the month, and globefund.com hits a month that does not have that many days, the transaction is usually executed on the 1st business day of the following month (see below for exception). Even when the short month of February comes around, all semi-monthly, monthly, bimonthly, or quarterly transactions with a start date that is the 29th, 30th or 31st of the month will be executed on the first business day of March.
If you choose the frequency 'End of month', globefund.com executes the transaction on the last business day of the month whenever that is. If the last business day falls on a holiday, the transaction is executed on the first business day of the next month. However, globefund.com uses the closing price of the day prior to the holiday when executing the transaction.
Funds that are Not Valued on a Daily Basis
Recurring transactions for funds that are not valued on a daily basis can result in globefund.com's inability to 'execute' the transaction and update your portfolio. For this reason, globefund.com issues a warning when you enter a recurring transaction for a fund that is not valued on a daily basis.
For example, let's suppose you enter a recurring transaction that has a frequency of semi-monthly, and you specify that the transactions are to be executed on the 15th and 30th of each month. If this is a fund that is only valued once a month, on the 30th of each month, globefund.com will be unable to execute the transaction for the 15th of the month and your portfolio will not be updated correctly. globefund.com will not attempt to execute your recurring transaction again after a failed attempt if it is a transaction for a fund that is not valued on a daily basis.
If you are buying a fund on a regular or recurring basis that is not valued daily, you should enter the transactions 'manually' using the Add Single Transaction function.
Stopping a Recurring Transaction
If you decide to stop making regular purchases of a mutual fund, you need to stop the corresponding recurring transaction in globefund.com.
To stop a recurring transaction, follow the instructions below.
- On the GLOBE Portfolio main page, click Stop Recurring Transaction. A list of recurring transactions for your portfolio is displayed.
- Click in the Stop column beside the recurring transaction(s) you want to delete. This will display a check mark in the small box.
- Click Stop Transaction.
If you forgot to stop a recurring transaction in GLOBE Portfolio at the same time that you actually stopped your regular fund purchases (or fund sell transactions), you can delete any of the individual buy or sell transactions that globefund.com generated automatically using the Delete Transaction option.
Editing a Transaction
Click the type of transaction you would like to edit:
To change the details of a buy or sell transaction that was added using Add Single Transaction, you must delete the transaction and add a new transaction with the desired changes. Here are the steps:
- On the GLOBE Portfolio main page, click Delete Transaction. globefund.com displays a list of the transactions for your portfolio starting with the most recent transaction.
- Click in the Del column beside the transaction you want to change. This will display a check mark in the small box.
- Click Delete Transaction. globefund.com re-displays the screen without the transaction you deleted.
- On the GLOBE Portfolio main page, click Add Single Transaction.
- Enter the new transaction with the correct details. Click either Buy or Sell depending on the type of transaction you are entering. No real units will be bought or sold. The Confirmation screen will be shown.
- If the transaction is correct, click Confirm this Transaction. To correct or change the transaction, click your Web browser's Back button.
Edit a Distribution Transaction
Distribution transactions (identified as DIST_BUY or DIST_CASH in the Action column of the Transaction report) cannot be edited or deleted. globefund.com receives distribution data directly from the fund companies.
To stop further distributions, click Change Fund Information on the GLOBE Portfolio main page, under Reinvest Distribution select No from the drop-down list and click Update at the bottom of the page.
To change the details of a recurring transaction, you must stop the current transaction and start a new one with the desired changes. Here are the steps:
- On the GLOBE Portfolio main page, click Stop Recurring Transaction. A list of recurring transactions for your portfolio is displayed.
- Click in the Stop column beside the recurring transaction you want to edit. This will display a check mark in the small box.
- Click Stop Transaction.
- On the GLOBE Portfolio main page, click Start Recurring Transaction.
Deleting a Transaction
Deleting a transaction should be something you do very infrequently. It should only be used to erase a transaction from your portfolio that was entered incorrectly. Once a transaction is deleted, you cannot display or access it again.
The procedure given below can be used to delete any type of buy or sell transaction. Distribution transactions (identified as DIST_BUY or DIST_CASH in the Action column of the Transaction report) cannot be deleted using this method. To stop further distributions, click Change Fund Information on the GLOBE Portfolio main page, under Reinvest Distribution select No from the drop-down list and click Update at the bottom of the page.
To delete any types of buy or sell transaction, follow these steps:
- On the GLOBE Portfolio main page, click Delete Transaction. globefund.com displays a list of the transactions for your portfolio starting with the most recent transaction. For each transaction, globefund.com displays:
- date
- type of transaction
- price of the fund on that date
- total number of units involved in the transaction
- total transaction amount
- transaction fee
If you have a lot of transactions and want to limit the display to only transactions for a particular fund, click the arrow beside Report for to get the pull-down list of funds in your portfolio. Select the fund of interest and click Go.
- Click in the Del column beside any transaction(s) you want to delete. This will display a check mark in the small box.
- Click Delete Transaction. globefund.com re-displays the screen without the transaction(s) you deleted.
Adding a Special Transaction
From time to time in the management of your portfolio, there may be fees or expenses incurred that you would want to account for inside your portfolio. RRSP trustee fees are a good example of this type of fee. The Add Special Transaction option allows you to track these kinds of fees in your portfolio.
To add a special transaction to your portfolio, follow the instructions below.
- On the GLOBE Portfolio main page, select Add Special Transaction.
- Select the fund that the special transaction is either related to or that the fee will be applied to from the pull-down list.
- Enter the date of the transaction in the Date column in the format yy mm dd. Because globefund.com does not have daily prices for all funds prior to December 31, 1997, special transactions cannot be entered for dates preceding December 31, 1997. To enter a transaction for a date prior to December 31, 1997, see Special Cases.
- In the Amount column, enter the charges related to the transaction.
- In the Payment Method column, select From fund units or Using outside cash depending on whether the amount will be deducted from your actual fund investment, or whether the amount will be paid from your cash account.
- Click Go. The Confirmation screen will be shown.
- If the transaction is correct, click Confirm this Transaction. To correct or change the transaction, click your Web browser's Back button.
How Special Transactions Affect Portfolio Reports
If you choose the Payment Method of From fund units when adding a special transaction, market value will decrease (since you have fewer units). Total Cost is not affected.
If you choose the Payment Method of Using outside cash, Total Cost will increase.
Adjusting the Number of Units Held
Very rarely in the management of your portfolio, you may want to make adjustments to the number of units held in a fund. You may want to account for:
- fees or expenses incurred before December 31, 1997
- rebates, in the form of units deposited directly into your fund account at no cost to you
- special cases in which you want to adjust the number of units held in a fund
To add a transaction for this special case (a buy or sell transaction), follow the instructions below.
- Under the heading Unit Price, click the circle beside $. In the box beside $, enter 0.00001. Your units will be bought or sold for this negligible amount.
- Enter the number of units you purchased or sold on the date entered in step 4.
- Click either Buy or Sell depending on the type of transaction you are entering. No real units will be bought or sold. The Confirmation screen will be shown.
- If the transaction is correct, click Confirm this Transaction. To correct or change the transaction, click your Web browser's Back button.
Fund Mergers
If GLOBE Portfolio suddenly stops updating one of the funds in your portfolio, it is likely that a fund merger has occurred. The details of fund mergers are reported in the globefund What's New. The What's New reports which funds continue, which funds were discontinued, and which funds were renamed as a result of the merger.
If you hold a discontinued fund in your portfolio, most of the entries for that fund in the Portfolio Reports will be blank. Since these funds are no longer active, they do not report price data and no further returns can be calculated. The discontinued fund's name will be black print instead of a blue link. Follow the steps below to account for the merger in GLOBE Portfolio:
- On the GLOBE Portfolio main page, click Add Single Transaction. Add a transaction to sell all units (click the circle beside Sell all units) held in the discontinued fund using the date the merger took place.
- On the GLOBE Portfolio main page, click Add Funds. Select the appropriate fund company from the drop-down list. Add the appropriate new fund to your portfolio.
- On the GLOBE Portfolio main page, click Add Single Transaction. Add a transaction to reinvest the amount into the new fund by entering a buy transaction for the new fund.
The statements from your broker or fund company will reflect similar transactions. The old fund will remain in your portfolio until you have completed the above transactions so don't worry about losing your record of it. Remember though that future returns on the old fund cannot be calculated because of the lack of any ongoing price information.
If you hold a fund that was renamed as a result of the merger or is shown as a continuing fund in the What's New: GLOBE Portfolio will automatically rename the fund for you. You do not need to do anything.

Portfolio Report
When thinking about your investments, the two questions that naturally arise are:
How much money have I made or lost over time? What has my return on investment been over time? This is a particularly useful piece of information when considering how your investments have performed compared to various benchmark indices such as the TSE 300 or Dow Jones Industrial Average.
To determine the answers to these questions, it is best to review the various situations that can occur with respect to investments.
The simplest case is to think of the funds that you currently own. You may have bought your current holdings all at once, or you may have bought them at various points in time and at a different unit price each time. You may be interested in the performance of just those funds that you currently own. In this case, when you set up your portfolio, you probably do not want to enter transactions for funds that you no longer own.
The more complicated case is where you purchased funds at some time in the past but have since sold some or all of those funds, or reduced your holdings in some of those funds. By entering all of your transactions over time, it is possible with globefund.com to gain a true picture of how your investments have fared over time (e.g., over several years, or over shorter periods like daily or year-to-date).
The Portfolio Report is a set of reports (Standard, Performance, Gain/Loss, and Annual) that provides different 'views' of your mutual fund portfolio. The Standard view combines elements from the Performance view and the Gain/Loss view to show you at a glance how your portfolio is performing since you started tracking it.
The Performance and Annual views provide return numbers over different timeframes, while the Gain/Loss view shows how much you have made (or lost) on your fund investments taking into account any sell transactions you have executed.
Note that reports will typically reflect your portfolio as of the close of the previous business day. Our database is updated with daily fund performance data at approximately 8 p.m. EST and then portfolios are updated, so reports displayed after approximately 9 p.m. EST will reflect the current day's closing prices. The date shown at the top of the report indicates the date of the fund prices used in generating the report. For example, reports generated on a holiday Monday and the following Tuesday will show Friday's date up until 8 p.m. EST on Tuesday, at which time the report date will be updated to Tuesday's date and Tuesday's closing prices will be used to generate all reports.
globefund.com tracks over 200 Canadian mutual funds valued in U.S. dollars. If you include such funds in your portfolio, GLOBE Portfolio reports will be split into separate sections for your Canadian and U.S. dollar holdings. Your total holdings and internal rate of return (IRR) are shown in each currency. At the end of these two sections, the Canadian dollar total market value is shown, based on the most recent U.S./Canadian exchange rate.
If you have more than one portfolio, there is a separate Portfolio Report for each of your portfolios. You can view a consolidated report that summarizes the holdings in all your portfolios. The consolidated report is available for the Standard, Performance, Annual, and Gain/Loss views with totals for each portfolio and the combined total for all your portfolios. To view the consolidated report, while on any report page select All Portfolios from the pull-down list beside Select another portfolio and click Go.
The various reports are described in detail in the following sections.
Standard Report
The Standard Report shows the value of your investments since inception (i.e., since you started keeping track of your transactions in globefund.com). If you entered transaction history that goes back several years, by default it shows the value and gain/loss in the value of those investments since the date of the first transaction entered to the present time. Alternatively, by selecting a Period Ending other than the most recent date, you can look at the value of your portfolio and gain/loss since the date of the first transaction to the selected month-end date.
Below is a description of each of the columns of information displayed in the Standard view of the Portfolio Report.
Fund Name
Name of the mutual fund.# Units
Total number of units held in each fund at the report date.Curr Price $ (Current Price)
If the fund company provides a daily closing price for this fund, the price shown in this column would be today's closing price (if this is a weekday evening after 8:00PM EST). Otherwise, it would be the closing price for the previous business day. Many funds only provide a weekly or monthly price, so the Curr Price would represent the most recently published price. If the price shown is not today's price or the price at the close of the previous business day, a date will appear in parentheses after the fund name.Mkt Val $ (Market Value)
# Units x Curr Price
Number of units multiplied by current fund price.Total Cost $
The total cost of the units held (i.e., the out-of-pocket investment made by you for the units held). For the purpose of this item, reinvested distributions are not considered to be out-of-pocket investments.Overall $ Gain/Loss
Mkt Value minus the Total Cost from the first transaction date to the report date.Overall % Gain/Loss
Percent change between Total Cost (A) and Mkt Value (B) from the first transaction date to the report date (i.e., 100 x (B-A)/A). This percent change does not have any particular timeframe associated with it (it could be 2.5 years or one month, depending on the date of the first transaction entered).% of Port
Shows the Mkt Value of each fund as a percentage of the total portfolio. This is a useful way to monitor the percentage of your foreign holdings and your asset allocation (e.g., equity versus fixed income).Trans/Chart

Click the chart symbol in a row for an individual fund to generate a chart for that fund. Click the chart symbol in the blue Total row to generate a chart for your entire portfolio.Performance Report
The Performance Report of GLOBE Portfolio provides information on how your portfolio has performed on a one-day, month-to-date (MTD) and year-to-date (YTD) basis. For each of these three time periods, it shows the actual dollar return and the return on investment on a fund-by-fund basis and for the portfolio as a whole. For example, the two columns under MTD show how many dollars you have actually gained or lost since the first of the month for each fund, and the return on investment for each.
GLOBE Portfolio relies on the industry accepted method of computing investment return which is based on the internal rate of return (IRR) algorithm. The rate of return calculated by IRR is the interest rate corresponding to a zero net present value of a series of cash flows. As stipulated by the Association of Investment Management Research (AIMR), mutual funds in Canada use the IRR method for presenting their rates of return. According to AIMR, "the recommended measurement of performance for presentation of the performance of a single private equity investment is the investments internal rate of return".
The dollar gain/loss computation takes into account any transactions that may have occurred over the three time periods. Computing the % return on an investment using the internal rate of return method is somewhat more complicated. It depends on what the value of an investment was at the beginning and end of a time period, and also on any cash flows that may have occurred over that time period, and exactly when they occurred. For example, suppose you owned 100 units of a fund worth $10.00 each on the first day of a month, and still held those 100 units on the 21st of a month when the unit value is $10.50. You can deduce that your month-to-date return on investment on the 21st is 5%. In this case, your return is exactly the same as the return of the fund itself. However, if during that period you bought 100 more units on the 10th at 10.40 and sold them on the 15th at 10.20, you clearly lost money on that transaction. The computation of return using the internal rate of return method takes this loss into account, and your return would be different from (and less than) the return on the fund overall.
Because returns calculated using the internal rate of return method take into account buys and sells occurring during the period of the calculation, returns on the Performance report will differ from the simple returns shown on globefund.com's Fund Reports or on the GLOBE Portfolio Standard report. Technically-minded users can gain more insight into the workings of IRR by looking at the help information available on IRR in Microsoft's Excel spreadsheet product.
The advantage of the percent returns computed by GLOBE Portfolio is that it allows you to compare how your own particular investments are performing compared to industry benchmarks such as the TSE 300, on both a fund by fund basis, and on an overall portfolio basis.
Below is a description of each of the columns of information displayed in the Performance view of the Portfolio Report.
Fund name
Name of the mutual fund.# Units
Total number of units held in the fund at the report date.Mkt Val $
# Units x NAVPS
Number of fund units multiplied by current unit price (NAVPS).One Day / $ Gain/Loss
Mkt Val (as of the date shown on the report) minus Mkt Val for the previous business day.One Day / % Return
Percent return of fund holding (as of the date shown on the report) since the previous business day.MTD / $ Gain/Loss
The gain or loss on your investment since the close of the last business day of the previous month.MTD / % Return
Percent return of the fund holding since the close of the previous month. If you have bought or sold units of this fund during this period of time, the calculation of gain/loss takes these transactions into account using the internal rate of return (IRR) algorithm.YTD / $ Gain/Loss
The gain or loss on your investment since the close of the last business day of the previous year.YTD / % Return
Percent return of fund holding since the beginning of the year. If you have bought or sold units of this fund during this period of time, the calculation of gain/loss takes these transactions into account using the internal rate of return (IRR) algorithm.Trans/Chart

The Annual report shows returns for the past two years, the current year-to-date and since inception. GLOBE Portfolio relies on the industry accepted method of computing investment return which is based on the internal rate of return (IRR) algorithm. As stipulated by the Association of Investment Management Research (AIMR), mutual funds in Canada use the IRR method for presenting their rates of return. According to AIMR, "the recommended measurement of performance for presentation of the performance of a single private equity investment is the investments internal rate of return".

A description of each column in the Annual report follows.
Fund Name
Name of the mutual fund.[Year] Gain/Loss $
The gain or loss on your investment from the close of the last business day of the year to the close of the last business day of the previous year.[Year] Gain/Loss %
Percent return of holding from the close of the last business day of the year to the close of the last business day of the previous year. If you have bought or sold units of this fund during this period of time, the calculation of gain/loss takes these transactions into account using the internal rate of return (IRR) algorithm.YTD / Gain/Loss $
The gain or loss on your investment since the close of the last business day of the previous year.YTD / Gain/Loss %
Percent return of fund holding since the beginning of the year. If you have bought or sold units of this fund during this period of time, the calculation of gain/loss takes these transactions into account using the internal rate of return (IRR) algorithm.Since Inception Gain/Loss $
The gain or loss on your investment since the first transaction date for the fund. are "simple" returns for periods up to 1 year. This applies for all returns except the since inception return which could be more than 1 year. If the inception date is more than 1 year, then the return shown is the annualized return.Since Inception Gain/Loss %
Percent return of fund holding since first transaction date for the fund. If you have bought or sold units of this fund during this period of time, the calculation of gain/loss takes these transactions into account using the internal rate of return (IRR) algorithm. The returns that are calculated via IRR are simple (non-compounded) returns for periods up to one year. If the time since the inception date is more than one year, then the return shown is the annualized return.Trans/Chart

Click the chart symbol in a row for an individual fund to generate a chart for that fund. Click the chart symbol in the blue Total/Avg row to generate a chart for your entire portfolio.Gain / Loss Report
The Gain/Loss report breaks down your investments into two classes: those that you still hold and those that you used to hold but have since sold. Note that in some cases, the same fund may have information in both classes (i.e., you for a particular fund, you sold some but not all holdings).
For this report, the period covered is by default from the date of the first transaction (inception) to the current date. However, you can change the start date to be the first day of the year or the first day of the month. This gives you a quick way of tracking your dollar gains and losses over different time periods than simply since inception. A description of each column in the Gain/Loss Report follows.
Fund Name
Name of the mutual fund.Units Held/ # Units
Total number of units currently held in each fund.Units Held/Mkt Value $
Current value of the units held.Units Held/Gain/Loss $
The dollar gain/loss for the units still held (i.e., market value minus total cost).Units Sold/ # Units
Total number of units that were once held but have since been sold.Units Sold/Total Sales $
Total value of the proceeds from all sales of the units previously held.Units Sold/Realized Gain/Loss $
Total sales minus your out-of-pocket cost of the units sold.Trans/Chart

If you have set up more than one portfolio, you can view a consolidated report that summarizes the holdings in all your portfolios. The consolidated report shows the Standard, Performance, Annual, and Gain/Loss reports with totals for each portfolio and the combined total for all your portfolios.
To view the consolidated report, while on any report page select All Portfolios from the pull-down list beside Select another portfolio and click Go.
Consolidated Chart: This chart displays two types of information. The total market value of all your portfolio holdings is plotted in black. The total amount of money invested in all your portfolios is plotted in blue and is labeled Amount Invested. Your buy and sell transactions trigger movement in both the market value line and the Amount Invested line.
Transaction Report
The Transaction Report is a log of all transactions you have added to GLOBE Portfolio as well as all the transactions that globefund.com has generated (e.g., distribution transactions, recurring transactions).
For each transaction, globefund.com displays the following information:
Fund name
Name of the mutual fund.Date
Date of the transaction.Price
